Episode 61: The Isley Brothers

A musical family that has managed to maintain its relevance in the Rock/Funk and R&B/Soul scene since 1954, the Isley Brothers rival the Jacksons in terms of longevity. Founded by brothers O'Kelly Isley Jr., Rudolph Isley, Ronald Isley and Vernon Isley, the group has endured various sibling rotations (including brother-in-law Chris Jasper ) over the years. What remained consistent was their ability to deliver music that defined a generation.

Their extensive song catalogue ranges from energetic funky dance numbers to sultry slow jams. They also have introspective offerings such as The Highways Of My Life and Harvest For The World. Inductees of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the success and influence of the Isley Brothers has been recognized worldwide, and although there are only two active members remaining (Ron and Ernie), and two brothers ( O'Kelly and Marvin) passed on, their music will continue to inspire those generations to come. So the moment I long awaited finally arrived last Tuesday; I got to see Sade live in concert. It was an experience I'll never forget, I was in awe for the whole show. My only wish was that it was in a smaller venue than the gigantic Air Canada Centre, Sade's performance is best enjoyed in a more intimate setting to get the full impact of the vibes she and the band sends out, but they did a great job at entertaining the packed building. After two hours flew by, the show was over, and I immediately wanted to see it all over again. For now I'll have to settle with the video clips I took.

Episode 57: I'm Sorry

No one likes being the ‘bad guy’, but there are times when we have to own up to our misdeeds and apologize. Saying sorry when you’re in the wrong is a real test of pride and humility. But for relationships to thrive, we have to be willing to admit our mistakes and ask for forgiveness in order to forge ahead onto better pastures. It’s easy to revert to the childish stance of “I’M not saying sorry until YOU say sorry”, or to rely on the ole passive aggressive line; “I’m sorry if you think I did something wrong”. Drop all that. If you really want to repair a relationship that’s on the rocks, you have to leave your ego at the door and acknowledge your faults.

So if you’ve done and/or said something that has hurt your significant other, and you sincerely want to apologize, here are a few tips on how to do it effectively. First, assess the situation. How bad is the fall-out? Is your partner not talking to you at all? Are they open to communication? You’ll need to decide the best way to reach out, whether it’s by email, phone or in-person. While it’s important to allow some time for both sides to cool off, don’t wait too long to give your apology, or you’ll be met with a much higher wall of resentment. Since you are the offender, you have to respect your partner’s space and the pace they set for the interaction. You can’t shove an apology down their ears if they’re not ready to hear it yet, but you need to let them know that you’d like to speak to them; in-person if possible, so that you can apologize.

Saying the word ‘sorry’ is not difficult, it’s the circumstances that surround the reason for the apology that makes it challenging. Not only is it a potentially embarrassing exercise, but it can be painful as well, because apologizing requires both of you to relive the ugly incident that took place. That’s why so many run from making apologies or at best do half-hearted ‘make-up favours’ that don’t directly address what happened, but an apology is implied. So it’s flowers, gifts, or just being extra nice and carrying on as if nothing happened, hoping your partner will take the hint and drop the issue. Now gifts and niceties are well, nice, but be careful not to have those serve as a substitute for saying sorry. ‘Buying’ one’s way out of an apology sets up an unhealthy pattern in a relationship and does nothing to resolve the issue. If you want to get your partner a gift, or do something romantic for them as a way to make-up, save that for after the apology.

So let’s get to the bare bones of it. How do you give a good apology? Well there are some main points you need to hit. First, be specific. Break down exactly what you did wrong - what you said, what you did - and then acknowledge the fact that it hurt your partner. Without offering any excuses, take ownership of your actions and claim responsibility for the role you played in the incident. Right away, you’d have accomplished about 80% of the challenge; accepting responsibility is MAJOR, and your partner will appreciate that. You could almost end there, but we won’t. There are a couple finishing touches that will put the issue to rest and your relationship back on track.

After your detailed apology, include what I like to call a ‘forward statement’. Basically, state your intentions going forward from this point. Make a promise to not repeat the offense, and since you already listed every painful point, you both know exactly what it is. You can also ask for your partner’s patience towards this end, as it may take you a few tries to correct your behaviour. Finally, ask for forgiveness. You’ve laid it all on the line and put the power back in their hands. Again, this will test your pride, but if you love this person, it’s worth it. Now if your partner decides that they are unable to forgive you, you have to accept that. An apology doesn’t guarantee forgiveness; sometimes the damage we’ve done is irreversible. The best you can do at that point is to forgive yourself, be at peace with the situation and be proud of yourself for at least being brave enough to say; “I’m sorry”.

She shot to stardom at the young age of 21 while singing lead for the band Rufus, and held captive the ears and hearts of over two generations. Episode 54: Nat King Cole - Unforgettable

He would have turned 92 years old today. Born Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 - February 15, 1965), Nat King Cole was an accomplished jazz pianist who rose to fame not for his fingers, but due to the smooth and elegant baritone voice that was his trademark. Sadly, Cole died of lung cancer when he was only 45 years old, but he is forever immortalized in the many recordings of his jazz & blues ballads. He also lives on in the talent of his daughter, singer Natalie Cole. In 2000, Cole was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his major influence on the genre, and I doubt future generations will go without being familiar with at least one of his songs. In honour of the unforgettable King Cole, here's a mix that'll keep him in your memory.

Thanks to a generous friend of mine, I got the chance to see Janet Jackson when her world tour stopped in Toronto last night. It was an amazing experience, as I'd never seen Janet live in concert before. As promised, she performed all her number one hits, and it was like entering a time capsule. Each song brought you right back to a time and place, and having Janet right in front of me made it an even more surreal experience. If you ever get a chance to see her, go! In the meantime, I've edited together some video clips and photos I took last night, they'll give you a sweet sampling of the amazing Ms. Jackson. Enjoy!

Episode 53: Lady T - Teena Marie

This past Saturday, March 5th, Teena Marie a.k.a. Lady T would have turned 55 years old. Unfortunately, that wasn't meant to be, as she was taken from us just last year, only a day after Christmas. A protege of the late Rick James, Teena Marie was known for having a soulful voice that initially surprised many because of the vessel that contained it. Her first album didn't show her picture on the cover, so most folks had the impression that she was a black woman. However, once she was 'unveiled', the Queen of Ivory Soul never let her appearance hold her back, as she was true to the gift of her musical talents, which crossed all boundaries and stereotypes.

Lady T not only wrote, produced and arranged most of her songs, she also played the keyboards, guitar and congas. From 1979-2009, Teena released thirteen albums, and many of her songs have been either sampled or covered by other artists. In honour of her life and the musical legacy that she blessed us with during her time on earth, I've put together a modest mix showcasing the talent of Lady T.

Episode 51: Believe in Love

Sometimes I wonder if I’m naïve, when it comes to love. All the advice I give, and hope I have, the belief I have in love…are they just the romantic musings of someone who’s seen too many rom-coms and read too many novels with happily-ever-after endings? As I write words of faith and trust, of working to make relationships work, a little bitter voice cackles in the far reaches of my mind, asking, “Do you really believe in all that you say? Is there really such a thing as happily ever after?”

When I witness the pain some of my friends have gone through in the name of love - lies, abuse, neglect; even when I recall my own horror stories…what the heck do I have to be so enthusiastic about? Am I leading folks astray by saying finding ‘the one’, and keeping them, can be done? Is there a reality I’m not aware of, in which love does not conquer all?

When you’re not sure of the direction you’re going in, whether you’re suited for the path you have taken in life, I’ve found the best way to get perspective is to imagine yourself at the extreme opposite of your current position. So at this point of feeling self-doubt, I’ve decided to entertain for a moment how my life would be if I dropped my rose-coloured glasses and took everything with quite a few grains of salt.

First, I would stop believing in the concept of love, and view relationship partners as nothing more than parasites. I would keep to myself, never going on dates or engaging in any interaction that was not strictly platonic. I would keep my heart fiercely guarded, never letting anyone in. To do that effectively I would have to make sure I didn’t share anything remotely personal or emotional, as that would make me vulnerable. No one could hurt me, take advantage of me…fool me. I’d be wise now, because after all, love is just a myth, a flower that fails to bloom. Since I’d no longer believe in love and the possibility of sharing my life with a so-called soulmate, I would just focus on the more intellectual aspects of life. Living in my head, not my heart.

Sheesh. I don’t want to live like that. But you know what? A lot of us have decided to. We’ve given up. We’ve seen and experienced too many love gone wrong stories to believe in love ever going right. We’ve withdrawn from the dance because we’re tired of having our feet stepped on. But as you sit on the sidelines, does that make you feel better? Safer? It may at first, but not for long. It’s okay to take a break from the love arena when your heart gets weary; it’s important to have that time to reflect and recharge, but to forgo love altogether is to deny yourself an important element of life itself.

You can’t love only yourself and not anyone else, just as you can’t love anyone else without loving yourself. You’ll only stunt your own growth if you disrupt the balance of that equation. One builds on the other, and to build anything, takes work. You just can’t escape it. And it’s not meant to be all heartache, or else what’s the point. Everyone deserves to love, and to be loved.

I am by no means a therapist, an expert or guru; just a woman who’s not afraid to love or to believe in the power that love has to transform and enrich lives. A big part of experiencing love is believing in it, and if you have people in your life who believe in it too, then that’s enough to keep you from being totally jaded and bitter. My life is so much better when there’s love in it; and even though there are times when I feel frustrated and pessimistic about relationships, I couldn’t see myself being able to live with the alternative. So if believing in love is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

Episode 50: Chemistry

When it comes to dating, one of the top qualities we look for is chemistry. What exactly is chemistry? It’s that electric charge you get when you’re in their presence, that irresistible pull when you hear their voice, see their face, even when you smell them. That’s really the chemical part of chemistry. There are real physiological factors at play, which we have no control over. Scientists have proven that our bodies release very potent chemical signals called pheromones, and while you won’t be able to smell them, they can have a very profound effect on you. Have you ever felt physically drawn to someone for some inexplicable reason? That’s chemistry, and for many it’s an essential component of true love.

It’s important to not confuse chemistry with compatibility. Just because you both have a lot in common doesn’t mean you’ll have chemistry together. It certainly increases the chances, but it’s not a guarantee. The fact that you both like the same music, working out, and watching kung fu movies won’t automatically translate into a match made in heaven, but it could make for a good friendship. And that’s the line that chemistry draws in the sand between the ‘love zone’ and the dreaded ‘friend zone’. We’ve all been there, not able to make a relationship out of a friendship ‘cause you’re just not that into them; the chemicals needed to create that spark is simply not there.

So how can you tell whether you have chemistry with someone? It usually happens within the first 10 seconds, but if you don’t feel it in that moment, it’s still possible for it to develop as time goes on. As you get to know and become more comfortable with each other, you’ll start to sense more than you did before. Common physical signs that chemistry is taking hold is when in their presence you feel weak in the knees, and have a rush of excitement that can cause your heart to race and your palms to sweat. You find yourself wanting to be as close to them as possible, perhaps to get a deeper whiff of those intoxicating pheromones.

Now just as compatibility is not enough to create chemistry, the reverse is true. Just because you’re feeling chemistry with someone doesn’t mean you’ll be good together as a couple. Sometimes all you have is chemistry, but everything else in your lives doesn’t gel, and that could spell trouble down the line. It’s a particular kind of hell having amazing chemistry with someone you’re not compatible with. You’re like a moth to a flame, knowing you’re doomed but unable to resist the heat. These are the encounters that inspire countless love songs and romantic movies. These are the relationships that you sometimes regret but never forget.

So it seems that the best bet is to find someone who you’re compatible and have chemistry with. Easier said than done isn’t it? You may have to make a compromise as to how much of each you’re willing to have in a relationship. While chemistry is the more alluring quality, being swept off your feet and onto cloud nine, compatibility is what you need to make a relationship last. Or maybe it’s the other way around? No matter how compatible you are, if you don’t feel that electric charge when you’re with them, then you’re not much more than intimate friends aren’t you? Maybe it varies day by day, sometimes it’s compatibility that gets you through the hard times, and chemistry that makes it worth going through. I guess all we can do is follow our heart, and our pheromones.

Whether you've been a Lovezone listener since the very beginning or logging on for the first time, I'd like to thank you for joining me on this love journey. Episode 43: Jealousy

Today we’re talking about a little green-eyed monster, you know the one, it’s called Jealousy. Have you ever been in a relationship with a jealous person? Do you get jealous when you’re in a relationship? Sometimes feelings of jealousy creep up on you out of nowhere. Maybe because your partner is still in touch with their ex, or when you’re out in public they get a lot of attention from ‘potential competition’, and it puts you on edge. Or maybe it’s your partner that gets a bit antsy every time you talk to someone of the opposite sex, or decide to have a night out with your friends. None of us are immune from the emotion of jealousy, but it’s something that we should be vigilant in avoiding, as it can ruin a relationship very quickly if allowed to fester.

The best way to get rid of jealousy is to get to the root of why you feel the way you do. What are the triggers? Identify and nullify them. Let’s go back to the example of the ex. Say your partner still talks to their ex, and that makes you uncomfortable. You need to communicate that to them and find a solution. If it’s not possible for them to stop talking to their ex, say because they have a child with them, then they need to be open with you about the nature of their contact. If you know exactly what they’re talking about, (speakerphone is great for this) then you don’t have to entertain any jealous thoughts based on assumptions. I know of couples who give each other the passwords to their phone, email, Facebook and Twitter accounts, so there is complete transparency. Not everyone would feel comfortable doing this, but it’s an option in the quest to build trust.

Trust. That’s really the issue with jealousy isn’t it? Not trusting that your partner is truthful, faithful. Not trusting that you are worthy of being truthful and faithful to. Those who don’t trust, like to control. If I can’t trust that you’ll be faithful to me, I’ll make you be faithful. What manifests out of that is a paranoia that poisons. Here come the constant phone calls and texts checking up on you, "Where are you, who are you with? Why didn’t you call me back? Where you looking at her? Where you looking at him? You’re cheating on me aren’t you? Just admit it, I know you’re lying, you won’t look me in the eye!"... Yeah, not pretty.

Don’t feed the green-eyed monster, it will devour you eventually. However, when it starts to lash its tail, don’t ignore it either. If you find yourself getting jealous often in your relationship, it could be because there is something your partner is doing to put you in a position of insecurity. Some people like to use that emotion as a way of manipulation in order to keep a person attached to them. It’s an unhealthy way to orchestrate a relationship, and it’s bound to backfire eventually.

And you know what, maybe there is a reason to be suspicious! You really have to look at everything with a clear vision and evaluate whether you are just being too paranoid or if there’s a more sinister situation at play. Trust your instincts, and if you have levelheaded friends, see if you can get an objective perspective. Also, let your partner know how you’re feeling, because if someone loves you, they will do all they can to make sure you feel secure in that love. We all come with a history and past hurts, so what may seem innocent to them, may be a red flag to you, so you have to find a common ground that you can both stand on. Jealousy is a seed that you don’t want to water in a relationship, it’ll become a weed that will choke the life out of anything you grow together, so the minute you see it sprout, pluck it out!

Episode 40: A Fool For Love

We’re often our own harshest critics. How many times have you called yourself stupid? Nobody can beat you up better than you can; especially when it comes to relationships gone wrong. After the break-up, you’re sitting there with all the ‘coulda woulda shoulda’s swirling within your mind, each one giving a vicious slap to your self-esteem. When things don’t turn out the way you thought they would, and the one you thought was the one is well, not the one, it can make you feel kind of dumb. Even if you were the one who broke it off, you can still feel embarrassed that you even made a decision to be in that relationship in the first place; look how it turned out, what were you thinking? Even when we are blindsided by a betrayal, we still feel stupid. ‘Why didn’t I know? This person made a fool of me!’

These torturous thoughts are debilitating and dangerous, for they can send you spiralling into a depression that can be very difficult to get out of. You can get trapped in memories of what went wrong and when, putting together a case of prosecution against yourself. Trust me; I know what I’m talking about. I’m as analytical as they come; I go over every word, every action...in every detail. I place such a high standard on myself that when things don’t go well, I immediately scrutinize myself to see what I did wrong, what I could have done better. But if I catch myself starting to feel stupid, I pull back by reminding myself that I’m not stupid, I’m a student. There was a lesson to be learned in the experience, no matter how painful or enraging it was.

Are you a quick learner when it comes to love? Or do you keep repeating the same lesson over and over again? It’s okay if you don’t get it the first time, a willing student can never be called stupid, because by being willing to learn, that’s the smartest thing you can do, no matter how many times you seem to fail. The key is to be compassionate with ourselves, we’re learning! Do you call a baby who doesn’t know how to walk yet, stupid? No, because they’re learning! We are all learning our love lessons, some have it harder than others, but we all deserve a gold star for trying. It isn’t exactly a science, this love thing. There’s no one right or wrong way to go about it; the love experience is as varied as the people who decide to be a part of it.

If you’ve been burned by the proverbial flame of love, don’t punish yourself for diving into the fire, or else those scars won’t heal, and guess what, you’ll keep getting burned until you learn that lesson. So how do you learn a lesson? You get in the right frame of mind, one free of self-judgement and criticism. We all become vulnerable when we step into love, and are prone to doing some pretty silly things when under its spell, so don’t be too hard on yourself for it. After all, that’s why they say only fools fall in love!

Episode 39: Young MJ

On this day in 1958, Michael Jackson was born. A child prodigy, he joined his brothers in their musical group the Jackson 5, singing lead at just five years old. He amazed the world with his vocal talent and performance skills, which we were to learn later came at a cost: his childhood.

As Michael matured and became a mega pop star idolized around the globe, that little child never disappeared. We could see it in his playful smile, his joy in dancing, his theme-park estate. And of course, his deep empathy for ailing children. He shared his vulnerability, and suffered for his innocence.

Soon after the time that Michael passed away last year, I happened to be in Illinois for a friend's wedding and took the opportunity to drive over to Gary, Indiana to visit the Jackson's original family home. Looking at the tiny house, I could just imagine a young Michael sitting at the window, gazing wistfully outside; longing to go play, to just be a kid.

Michael's sacrifice of his childhood gave us the benefit of a musical legend the likes of which we've never seen before nor will see again. So as we honour MJ's life on this day, let's also pay homage to the child that defined a large part of the man he became. This one's for you Michael.

Episode 38: Take It Slow

Sometimes when you’ve been single and looking for a long while, it can be a bit of a surprise when all of a sudden, a potential partner appears; full of passion and desire to start something with you, right now.

After trudging through the desert of loneliness, here comes this beautiful oasis of love, inspiring the temptation to just go full steam ahead and dive right in. I totally understand that urge, none of us are immune to it, but I’d like to caution you to just wait a bit longer before you enter; see if that oasis is for real or just a mirage. Now I’m not encouraging you to be mistrustful or negative when you meet somebody new, just to take it slow enough to get a better evaluation of who they are and whether you are compatible beyond chemistry.

We live in a ‘give it to me now’ society; where instant gratification is expected, heck, it’s demanded. So it goes a bit against the grain when you prefer to take a laid-back approach when getting to know a romantic candidate. The person may think you’re not that into them since your eagerness doesn’t match theirs, they may even step it up in the pursuit to win you over; trying even harder to get your approval and commitment. That will apply even more pressure for you to make a decision. The thing is, for those of us looking for a serious relationship, we don’t need the song and dance, we need to see the walk and the talk, and that will take the time it needs to take.

You may have thoughts of guilt when applying the brakes on another’s forward motion into your life. After all here’s someone who’s interested in you, and you like them too, you’re just not keen on jumping in bed right away and sharing closet space just yet. That’s absolutely normal, and you shouldn’t feel mean about it.

I think it’s rare to find two people who’ve fallen in love at the same time with the same intensity. Everyone has to go at a pace that’s comfortable for them. No doubt our past experience with heartbreak will influence that, but as long as you’re willing to explore new possibilities, it’s absolutely in your right to be cautious. If you’re feeling rushed into a relationship, don’t allow that fear of ‘missing out on a good thing’ force you to disregard your first instinct. Take the time that’s right for you to feel secure.

Now I say this a lot, but it’s true - communication is key. If you’re dating someone who keeps hitting the fast-forward button, let them know that you prefer to just take things mid-tempo, so that you can savour the experience of getting to know them. I’ll also give you one warning: it’s important that you don’t sleep with them in the beginning stages, ‘cause that’ll throw things into a whole other level of complication. Getting intimate off the bat can cloud your judgment, and will create a lot of mixed signals. So it’s best to leave that till later, if things are going in the right direction, you’ll get there eventually. If the person you’re dealing with can’t accept that, then well maybe their priorities are not aligned with yours.

Love is not something that can be rushed, nor should it be; when it’s allowed to bloom in its own time, a much richer experience develops. So don’t rush and don’t worry, when you’re ready to take that step, you’ll know it.

Episode 37: Whitney Houston

Her songs are ones you have to sing along to from the beginning to the end. With a voice that had no equal, Whitney Houston climbed the multi-octave range into our hearts. Just as Micheal Jackson broke across the mainstream barrier with his pop appeal, Whitney was one of the first African American female artists to be heavily featured on MTV and most radio stations; opening doors for other divas to follow in her footsteps. Her mega-success in the mid-1980s and early 1990s has made Whitney one of the world's best-selling female artists of all time; you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't know at least one of her songs.

Whitney Houston's journey has been one of amazing highs and lows, and as she now turns 47 years old, one can only imagine how she reflects on the time that has passed; the lessons learned and stripes earned. In honour of the woman who gave us the 'greatest love of all' and made us 'exhale', I've put together two 'Whitney Mixes', the first one containing her upbeat and danceable tracks, the other featuring some of her best known ballads. We'll always love you Whitney, happy birthday!

Episode 33 - More Than Friends

How can you tell when someone likes you as more than just a friend? Well, you could just ask them outright, but that could be kind of awkward wouldn’t it, especially if the answer is ‘no’. So I’m going to share a few ways to figure out if your friend has feelings for you.

Now there’s no guarantee to this, some people are REALLY good at masking their emotions, but sometimes even they can give away little telltale signs of what’s going on beneath the surface. Which brings me to the first technique: observe body language. Does your friend often come into your personal space, standing or sitting a bit closer to you than normal? Or perhaps they often find a way to brush against you or touch your hand. Does she/he look you dead in the face for every conversation you have, no matter how trivial? And since they’re looking, see if you can spot whether their pupils are dilated, because it’s a scientific fact that when you look at someone you are attracted to, your pupils dilate. Now be careful when leaning in to check, they may think you’re going for a kiss!

Pay attention to behaviour. Observe how your friend acts when around you, are they awkward or nervous? Maybe even have a slight stutter? How about slightly shaky hands or sweaty palms? If so, they’ve definitely gotten a prick from Cupid’s bow. Especially if all of a sudden they’re taking care to dress nicer than usual, or wearing perfume, cologne or make-up when meeting up with you. Always trying to show their best side...yup, your friend wants to be more than just a buddy.

Listen to what they say, and don’t say. Is your friend complimenting you more than usual? Or giving you slightly flirtatious lines? Do they get quiet when you talk about someone you’re dating or have a crush on, avoiding the topic altogether? Or perhaps they’ll steer the conversation to ask you what your preferences are in a mate, casually noting that you both have a lot in common in that area. Hmmm.....

What makes this a bit challenging is that this person is your friend, so you’re already kind of in a relationship with them, platonic as it may be, and it may be easy to confuse or misinterpret certain actions or words as being friendlier than the norm, so you really have to use your own judgement on this. Now if you do get confirmation that your friend does indeed have designs on your heart, well the next step is up to you, and that’s a whole other topic!

Episode 32: The Legendary Lionel Richie

You can't compile a list of legendary love songs without including at least a handful from Lionel Richie. Having sold over 100 million records worldwide, Lionel is one of the most successful balladeers of our time. From his early career with The Commodores to his mega-success as a solo artist, Lionel became internationally known for his distinctive songwriting skills and soulful crooning voice.

Today Lionel Richie turns 61 years old, and is still going strong. Admittedly, his later albums didn't reach the same acclaim as his earlier work in the 1980s, but he's a solid performer and a staple on most Adult Contempory/R&B radio station playlists. In honour of the man who got us Dancing On The Ceiling and showed how to give Endless Love, I've put together a mix of my favourite Richie tracks, from his solo and Commodore days.

Episode 31: The Prolific Prince

There are many words (and symbols) you can use to describe Prince, but the one that first comes to mind for me is 'prolific'. He is said to have written more than a thousand songs, with ten platinum albums and thirty Top 40 Singles to his credit. His unique sound and style played a major role in the musical era of the 1980s and early 1990s.

Born June 7, 1958, the Minneapolis native made an indelible mark on the music industry with not just his artistry but his business savvy. He pushed the envelope in all areas; he was no stranger to controversy, that's for sure. Despite his diminutive size, Prince has a swagger that no one can deny, with an image that was sex personified. Prince is also fun, you want to get a party jumping, throw on one of Prince's early tracks, and watch everyone go crazy.

Celebrating his 52nd birthday today, Prince has become alot more toned down over the years, but that's not a bad thing, he's still got it. In honour of the prolific Prince, I've made two mixes featuring some of my favourite songs of his, from the uptempo to the slow jams, and boy he sure does know how to put in down in the bedroom. Yeah...he's still got it.

Episode 30: War Of The Hearts...(arguing in a relationship)

I don’t think anyone really likes being in an argument, especially with your significant other, but there is no relationship that doesn’t experience a spat or two now and then. It’s not the end of the world if you have disagreements, it doesn’t mean the relationship is doomed or that your partner doesn’t love you as much. It’s just that as humans, we don’t always see eye to eye, and a big part of making a relationship work is to understand that, and make compromises and adjustments accordingly.

There’s no way you can avoid all argument, it’s actually important to engage in discussions that may seem divisive at first. By airing out all the contention, both sides can have a clear view of what the issue is for the other, and make constructive steps towards resolving them. And that’s the key word here: ‘constructive’. There’s a thin line between arguing and fighting. You definitely don’t want to be in a relationship where you’re fighting your partner (verbally or physically), so we have to make certain steps to foster an environment where each person feels comfortable bringing up concerns that may be unpleasant to talk about.

The phrase: “We need to talk” can bring an instant cringe, but hey, if you avoid talking, there might soon be yelling, or just sullen silence that can create a distance, and before you know it, your relationship is on the rocks. It’s always best to nip things in the bud right away when it comes to disagreements. Maybe if we view arguments as ‘passionate discussions’, they won’t be so intimidating. If you’re hankering for a passionate discussion with your partner, or they’re initiating one with you, here are some tips that can help you get through the storm.

1. Listen carefully. Make sure you allow your partner to tell you what their concerns are, in detail, ask questions if there are points you would like to be made clear. Don’t interrupt when they’re in mid-sentence or mid-thought, just listen.

2. Respond respectfully. Acknowledge your partner’s issues and the situation at hand, even if you don’t agree with their viewpoint, let them know that you understand what they’re trying to say. Then put forward your response in a clear and straight-forward manner, allowing them to ask questions of clarification, because you know what, alot of times arguments spring out of miscommunication.

3. Seek a solution. Make sure you end an argument with some sort of conclusion, even if it’s just to agree on revisiting the topic at a later time. Maybe because you both need to cool down and collect your thoughts, going over the points that each side has shared. But hopefully the solution can be made in the moment of the disagreement. Look for a way to compromise. Be willing to be wrong. Maybe all you need to do is apologize, or just forgive.

Getting into an argument sucks, but it’s another way of getting to know more about your partner, and once you both know what the other finds annoying, your less likely to get into them. Ultimately, if you’re both committed to making your relationship work, you have to do all you can to work it out. And there’s nothing like making up after an argument!

The Lovezone featured on The Kelly Alexander Show

I first met Kelly Alexander back in university days, we were both enrolled in Ryerson's Radio & Television Arts program in Toronto. We were die-hard radio-heads. In the R.T.A. program, the first year focuses on radio, the second on television, and then for the remaining two years, it was up to you which stream you wanted to focus on. Both Kelly and I had no doubts on what we wanted to stick with. Radio was our passion, and we thrilled in creating audio landscapes for the 'theatre of the mind'.

After graduating we went our separate ways, pursuing careers in radio broadcasting; her in Montreal at Virgin Radio, and me in Toronto at FLOW93.5FM, and later in Taiwan at ICRT FM. We stayed in touch over the years, and have finally been able to join forces via the power of the internet. Along with her current gig at Virgin Radio, Kelly has lauched The Kelly Alexander Show online, and has been so kind to ask The Lovezone to come on board with a bi-weekly podcast feature and blog.

In an industry that can lean a bit to the fake side, Kelly has always kept it real; she's a straight shooter and a joy to be around. She's also a champion karate fighter, so you know she's got focus and determination. So when you get a chance, be sure to go visit my girl and check out her show.

Funny How Time Flies. The youngest of the famous Jackson family clan, Janet Damita Jo Jackson turns 44 years old today. Since 1982 she's been bringing us the hits with her sexy signature sound. A true son of soul, there is no other like Stevie Wonder. For nearly 50 years, Stevland Hardaway Morris has shared with us his innervisions of love and solidarity, using multi-faceted musical abilities that still amaze.

I first fell in love with Stevie's songs as a kid growing up in the 1980s.  Whenever I heard Ribbon In The Sky, for some reason it always brought tears to my eyes, it was so beautiful and touching. I used to sing Ebony & Ivory so much I named my two cats after it (luckily one was ebony-coloured, but the other one was a mix of black and white, so I called him Pete, but if he was all white, he would've definitely been named Ivory! I know, I'm silly.)

Anyway, as I grew older, I collected all the Stevie Wonder albums I could, going back into his early childhood years at Motown. With each new discovery, I became more intrigued by the man and the music of his mind. If I could use one word to describe Stevie's songs, it would be 'honest'. You believe every word and feel every note, whether it was a plea for love, a call to justice or just a call to the dancefloor, Stevie's music moves you.

Turning 60 years old today, Stevie Wonder is truly a living legend, one who has and continues to be a strong artistic influence/inspiration to musicians and singers alike.  So in honour of Mr. Wonder's special day, I've put together a double mix of some of my favourite Stevie songs.

Episode 27: Loving You

Are you on the list of people you love? Did you even think to put yourself there? Many of us define ourselves by who we love, but do you love you? Off the bat many would say “why yes, of course I love myself”, but if you examine the people around you, and the habits you engage in, the opposite may be true.

The concept of self-love may seem well, selfish; but it’s actually very necessary if you intend to develop and maintain meaningful relationships. I can’t be good to you if I’m not good to me, right? Some of us are very good at loving; giving and caring for others, but have difficulty practicing it on ourselves. A lack of self-love will put you in some messed up situations where love is something to be pursued and earned; not realizing that you must first possess it within yourself. The love that comes to you is a reflection of the love you already have.

So how do you practice self-love? Get to know yourself. Make a list of all the things that make you, you. Become conscious of who you are, not what you think you should be. Accept all that you see, unconditionally. Never mind the flaws, we all got them, it’s what you do in spite of them that matters. You are a work in progress, but in this moment, you are complete. Let that sink in for a bit…right now, you are complete. Do you believe what I’m telling you? Is there a little voice in your head saying otherwise? The minute we start to analyze ourselves we start to criticize ourselves, finding fault in a million things, and all that does is distract us from the power we have to transform ourselves and the world around us. There’s only room for one in the driver’s seat of your mind, so who are you letting take the wheel of your thoughts?

You really have to make a conscious decision to live a happy and fulfilled life. So many of us take things as they come, living by ‘default’ so to speak, never asking for more, nor expecting much in the first place. Just as a flower needs water and sunlight to grow, you have to nurture yourself in every way, expecting the best and believing you deserve it; wouldn’t you want the best for someone you loved? Once you start to think positively about yourself, just like that flower, you begin to blossom. And those positive thoughts turn into positive actions that will move you towards the relationships necessary for your growth.

When you are in a loving state of mind, you approach life differently, you start to surround yourself with people who compliment your outlook, and pull away from those who don’t. You can’t love yourself and be in a relationship where you are treated badly, those two mindsets can’t co-exist. You can’t attract real love if you don’t have real love for yourself. You may attract someone willing to give you real love, but if you don’t love yourself, you’ll be unable to accept it, and that love won’t last. Too many times we sabotage our own happiness because we don’t feel we deserve it.

Practicing self-love takes…practice. You have to be vigilant with your thoughts and actions, always making sure that the things you do and say are positive and conducive to your life-goals. It requires you to let go of your fears and self-doubt, and to be truthful with yourself on all levels. Trust yourself, forgive yourself, believe in yourself, follow your dreams, find your joy and stay in it. Be the love you want to see, and it will be.

Episode 26: Mother's Day

I've had the fortune of having more than one mother in my life, from grandma to aunties and cousins; each teaching, healing, guiding, and loving me. During my childhood and teenage years, life circumstances didn't allow for me have a full relationship with my own mother, but as an adult I'm glad that we are now forging a connection of sorts. It's not easy (the past still pains), but we're trying, and that's what matters.

Each Mother's Day reminds me to not just celebrate the women who mothered me, but to also reflect on what the concept of motherhood is. I may be committing a type of sacrilege by saying this, but not all biological mothers are 'maternal'. By just bearing a child, it doesn't necessarily mean you become instantly equipped (mentally, emotionally, financially) with all you need to raise it well. We all know this, but society has a habit of romanticizing the image of motherhood and it can become a burden for women who struggle to live up to the ideal of 'superwoman': one who sacrifices all for her children; a humble martyr. While there is a measure of nobility in sacrifice, a woman shouldn't have to forever wear that cape. It denies them the right to be less than strong, to be wrong, to be tired; to be human.

All parents make mistakes, but if they did the best they could with what they had (knowledge, resources, time), that definitely deserves honour. I am grateful to my mother for bringing me into this world when she didn't have to, and for struggling to make a better life for me, even when that meant sending me away to live with relatives. She wasn't the 'typical' mother, but she loved me the only way she knew how, and I've grown to accept that.

I too may become a mother one day, and although I'm sure I'll mess up now and then figuring out the whole parenting thing, I won't be concerned with them perceiving me as a superwoman, but just a woman who loves them supremely. So with that, I'd like to wish every woman who has taken on the mantle of motherhood a very special day of appreciation and joy. I applaud you.

Episode 24: Baby Come Back!

Today’s topic in The Lovezone is about getting your ex back. No, I don’t mean getting revenge; I mean getting them back into a relationship with you. A few weeks ago we talked about how to get over your ex, but what if you don’t want to get over them? What if you think your love deserves another chance? Hey, you never know what you have until it’s gone. And sometimes that’s the wake-up call needed to take a relationship seriously. But what do you do when it’s already over?

Well I’ll tell you this much: timing is everything. And individual cases will vary. Especially when it comes to how you broke up. If your ex caught you cheating with their best friend, or you gambled away their life savings, well you might want to wait awhile before trying to mend that bridge…if it can be mended at all. And that’s the thing, there’s no guarantee to this. There are some people who don’t go back to what they left behind, and others who are always willing to give things another try. If the break-up was relatively straightforward and civil, and the person doesn’t hate you, things just didn’t work out for some minor reason or the other…then maybe there’s a possibility for a love revival.

So how will you know whether the water is warm or cold? Dip a toe in. Send a quick ‘hey how ya doin’?’ email or text. Something friendly, upbeat and short. If you get no response, or a response that pretty much says ‘get lost’. Then leave it alone. Maybe it’s too soon to reach out, or they’ve moved on, and you’ll have to do the same. But if you get a positive reply, and they seem open to conversation, then you can step it up a notch. Send a longer email, or see if you can talk to them on the phone. But this is where you need to be clear with your intentions. Lay it all out, say that you are interested in rekindling the relationship, and list the reasons why. If there is an apology to be made or promises to be pledged, now is the time. But don’t beg or sound desperate. And if you are desperate, then I advise you to not even try to get back with your ex; the worst thing you could do is to start a relationship from a position of desperation. It will not work.

Make sure you’re approaching this from a healthy and mature standpoint. Don’t try to get back with your ex just because you’re not comfortable with being single…you know them, they know you, so why bother finding somebody new? Don’t do that. If you broke up, it was for a reason, and if that issue doesn’t get addressed, it will rear its ugly head again. So you really have to be sure that you’re going into this with the intent of doing better than the last time around. If you really think that you are good for them, and they are good for you, go for it. Good luck!

Episode 23: For The Love of Luther

He was one of the great kings of R&B. His smooth and soulful voice was unmistakable and unmatched. Nobody could sing a love song the way Luther could; no slow jam selection is complete without at least one of his ballads. Luther suffered a stroke on April 16, 2003 and never fully recovered, eventually passing away July 1, 2005. Today is Luther's birthday, he would have turned 59 years old.

Although we lost him way too soon, Luther left us with such a large legacy of music that he will forever live on. In honour of the man and his music, I've put together two tribute mixes, the first showcases his more upbeat material, and the second features the sweet slow jams he's most recognized for. There was once a time when online dating was seen as a last resort for creepy people who couldn't find a way to meet mates in ‘real life’. Now much of the taboo is gone from the online hook-up; as the popularity of social networking sites grows, online dating is now seen as normal, for the most part. It's not a big deal. It's also big money, with countless dating websites jockeying for the memberships of those looking for love and liaisons. A quick Google search will turn up dating sites for all kinds of folks, from cat lovers to cooks. If you decide to dive into the online dating pool, here are few things to keep in mind.

Perfect your profile. The upside of online dating is you have access to a much larger group of potentials, but it’s very easy to get lost in the masses. So when completing your profile, you have to do it with the aim of standing out from the all the other fish in the cyber-sea. Sounds like you’re about to submit a job application doesn’t it? But don't worry, it's not as hard as it seems, and you’ll most likely have fun doing it. Many dating sites make it real easy by giving you pre-prepared forms where all you have to do is select the attributes that best describe you and the mate you’re looking for. Some make you fill out questionnaires that will tabulate all your answers into a personality assessment which will then be matched to other members who may be compatible with you.

The whole process of setting up a profile can even illuminate a few things about yourself that you didn’t know. How often do we get a chance to sit and write down what we’re specifically looking for in a mate? Not to mention having to analyze yourself and pick out the qualities that you think make you a good catch. Would you date someone like you? But I digress...back to the profile. So you’ve filled out your age, height, body type and profession, now it’s time to get that profile poppin’. Here’s another ‘P’ word for you: Picture. Yes, the one that’ll say a thousand words. The pics you put on your profile will say alot about you, so be sure to post up the ones that not only show your good side, but your personality. Action shots are great but don’t be too staged with it, unless you’re going for the comedy effect, and hey, everyone likes someone who can make them laugh.

Now comes the write-up. That’s where the challenge really comes in; how to be interesting and appealing with your words, how to make that impression that will prompt a potential date to click your link? This will take a bit of time, but again, it can be fun. This is where you make your wish list, your declaration of standards and expectations, and what kind of adventure someone can expect to have should they choose to get on the love train with you. If you browse other profiles, you’ll get alot of great examples of what can appeal and what can repel. Everyone has their own writing style so I’m not going to tell you how to do that, but my advice is to just keep it positive, specific and uniquely you.

Online dating can be a whirlwind of an experience; it certainly makes it easier to meet people, but once you do, all the rules of dating still apply. You'll have to get to know the person, see if the chemistry online continues offline, and whether things can go further than an instant message. If you’re looking for a serious relationship, it’s still going to take work, sorry! I have heard both happy stories (like getting engaged) and horror stories (like getting stalked) from people who’ve tried online dating. But that’s dating in general isn’t it? No matter how you met, you’re dealing with human beings, and they’re much more complicated than a computer. So if you’re surfing for love, be safe, be selective, and be real.

Episode 19: The Ex-Factor

This week’s topic in The Lovezone is about the Ex-Factor. Yes, how to get over your ex. Spring is here, it’s time for new beginnings, clearing out the old for the new, yadda yadda. But really though, you can’t move forward if you’re still stuck in the past. If you’re truly ready to let go of the emotional baggage, say no to what’s bad so you can say yes to what’s good, here are some steps you need to take to get to that next level of being relationship-ready, or just comfortable with your new singlehood.

Okay, first things first. Press delete. That’s right, unfollow them on Twitter, unfriend them on Facebook, remove them from your MSN or Yahoo messenger, don’t forget Skype, and of course, your cell phone. Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t say this was going to be easy! But you gotta do it! If you keep checking their status updates, reading their wall and tweets, keep checking to see if they pop up in your chat window online, you’re gonna drive yourself crazy, and you’re definitely not going to get over them any time soon. So do yourself a favour and delete them. Now, if your ex is also a parent of your child, still delete them from all the social networking stuff, and if you must keep them in your phone, change their name to ‘Jenny’s dad’ or ‘Jason’s mom’, so you don’t associate their name with you, you associate it with your child, who’s really the most important one in the equation here.

Next thing, keep it moving. To get over it, you must get on with it. Now you’re solo, so what? This is an opportunity to focus on you; reconnecting with who you are and what makes you happy. Dress in your best every day, workout regularly, get in touch with your spiritual side, take up a new hobby, and if you can, take a trip. Change up your scenery; get away from the familiar places that may trigger old painful memories. Speaking of memories, nothing brings those back sharper than a picture. If you have any around of you and your ex, get rid of them, or put them away in a box or folder until you’re ready to delete them. Maybe you’ll never do that, but while you’re trying to get over an ex, it’s best to not have images of them around. Another thing...if they used to live with you, buy new bed sheets, and rearrange the furniture.

While you’re keeping busy and keeping positive, don’t forget to look for the lesson. Friends come in handy for this. You need someone to talk it over with; not that you have to tell everybody your business, but pick a few close friends to share your pain with, and hopefully they each can give you not only support but perspective. And do be honest with yourself; ask the tough questions. Try to figure out why you’re having trouble letting go; examine your regrets, your guilt, your anger. Don’t beat yourself up about the ‘shoulda woulda coulda’s’. Remember, no matter how it ended, if you learnt from it, it was a successful relationship.

Final tip: Focus. Now’s not the time to let your mind wander, because it’ll mosey on down memory lane, and we don’t want that right now. Replace thoughts of your ex with thoughts of your next vacation, or thoughts of your next meal; whatever it takes to break the feedback loop of torture. The sooner you train your brain to avoid depressing distractions, the better. I find playing music an excellent mood-improver. Getting over an ex takes time, and we can’t totally delete them from our memories, and we shouldn’t, because within them are the lessons we’ve learned, and that’s something that will never be erased.

No Means Yes

Have you ever been in love with someone who wasn’t in love with you? Did you stick around, and try to prove to them just how attractive and loveable you are, hoping they would change their heart? Why do we want those who don’t want us? Why do we hope ‘no’ will eventually become ‘yes’? What do you call this behavior? Hopeless romanticism? Delusion? Self-torture?

Sometimes we’re led on by a ‘maybe’, which is really a ‘no’ in disguise. And it’s the most torturous word, because it keeps you hooked. That ‘maybe’ is heard in the phrases, “I’m not sure what I want, I just need a little more time to figure it out” or “I don’t think I’m ready for a relationship just yet, but if I was, you’d be the first person I’d want to have one with”. Those ‘maybe phrases’ discourage and encourage at the same time. It takes the person saying them off the hot seat - hey, they told you they weren’t ready for a relationship - and puts the burden on you to prove to them that they are ready, and you are the one they’re ready for, if only they could just see it!

It’s the most confusing thing, to start what you think is a relationship with someone, only to be told that they’re not really looking to get ‘serious’…even though all their actions towards you indicate that they are. Basically, they want you around, but don’t want you to get any ideas of commitment in your head about it. Frankly, that’s just selfish. It’s not fair to be put on hold like that, to give your all and not get anything in return. Nobody wants to be the bad guy though, to be the one to say ‘I’m just not that into you’ or ‘I’m not interested in a relationship, but I’d like to have all the perks of being in one’. So we end up in these undefined situations which have you putting ‘it’s complicated’ as your relationship status on Facebook.

By holding onto the crumbs that fall from the table of love, you deprive yourself of truly being full. You hoard them, savour them, but they leave you even more famished. In that state of starvation our spirits become obsessed and shriveled, driven only by the hunger to be satisfied. And that desperation leads to bad choices.

While there is virtue in patience and hope, there’s a time when we have to become realistic with the situations we find ourselves in. If you find yourself always having to understand and excuse someone’s inattention and unavailability, it’s time to come to terms with the fact that they’re just not ready, and you're wasting your time and energy trying to change that. If they say ‘no’ to you, you need to say ‘no’ to them too.

When you learn to say no, you’re finally saying yes to yourself. You’re saying yes to your desires, and to what you deserve. Yes, it’s hard to let go of the little we have, because we fear it’s the most we’ll ever get. But you have to do it; take that leap of faith, because I assure you, much more is in store. You must make room on your plate for the feast to come. So say no to the crumbs and take your place at the table; there is a seat reserved just for you.

Episode 17: Neo Soul Selections Vol. 1

Neo soul music emerged in the mid-1990s, adding much needed life to the overly pop R&B scene of the time. With artists like D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Maxwell and Jill Scott, a new sound was born (again). Interweaving elements of hip hop, soul, funk, and jazz, this sub-genre of R&B could only be described as neo soul - the 'new' soul. Not only was the music refreshing, but so were the lyrics; they were deep, they were thoughtful, they were loving and mature. It was a rebirth of musicianship and live instrumentation; it was grown folk music.

Neo soul isn't so 'neo' anymore, it's continued to evolve and so have the artists that represent the style. Frankly most of my favourite R&B artists are those who have that funky, hip hop, jazzy soulful vibe to their music, and of course have songs with well thought out lyrics that speak to your heart, and soul.

I had a heck of a time putting together this set, because of the mountain of selections I had to choose from. There's no way one mix can encapsulate the who's who of the neo soul sound, so forgive me if your favourite isn't in this one, that's why it's volume 1, there'll be more to come...

Episode 16: A Love Holiday

As Valentine’s Day descends upon us, we’re bombarded with the usual commercials and commentary on how to show that special someone how much you love them. V-Day can be uncomfortable for both the single and attached. For singles, it presents the reminder that you don’t have a significant other, and for those in a relationship, the pressure is on to ‘prove’ your love to your partner. Then there’s the task of having to come up with interesting answers to the questions, “so what do you have planned for Valentine’s Day?” And afterwards, “so what did you DO on Valentine’s Day?” Some of us opt out of celebrating it altogether, but it’s kind of hard to ignore all the fuss going on (unless you live under a rock) and in some way, we are forced to acknowledge the significance of the day.

What’s so significant about V-Day anyway? Why has the card and flower-filled ritual endured throughout the centuries? Well the answer is simple: it’s about love, and we can all relate to love. Who doesn’t appreciate someone proclaiming their adoration for you in a poem or with a thoughtful gift? Making it an event to prepare and participate in, gives it importance. Honestly, with the way our modern society is, a lot of times we wouldn’t get around to doing the things we should be doing every day if there wasn’t an ‘official’ day slotted for it. Take the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays for example, we know we can get together with the ones we love at anytime, express our gratitude and affection at any time, but things seem to have a more special glow when there’s a day dedicated to it. And hey, I’m all for a day dedicated to love.

A love holiday. Sounds nice doesn’t it? You can schedule one whenever you’d like, for as long as you’d like, but if February 14th does it for you, that’s cool too. Maybe it includes champagne and chocolates, flowers and flirting, or poetry and passion. Maybe it’s just you doing something nice for yourself; self-love is something many of us have too little of. What do you love about yourself? What things can you do in your life to affirm and maintain that love? Love starts from within after all. If you want to be in love, you must live in love. It’s a state of being; an awareness of connection, a willingness to be vulnerable, to share...knowing that there’s always more to spare. Since we’ve set aside a day for love, let’s do it justice by going deeper than the Hershey’s Kisses and Hallmark cards.

So how do you prove your love? A lot of times we have restrictive standards on what constitutes love, and that limits our ability to give and receive it. Sometimes realizing you’re in love comes as a shock; a sneak attack that brings you to your knees...why do you think they call it ‘falling in love’? When you start to care really deeply for someone, it can be a scary yet exhilarating experience - this person has your heart...wait a minute...this person has your heart!! Hopefully the joy replaces the panic, because love can’t thrive in fear. And that’s how you prove your love is true: you give it with joy; with no conditions...no point system. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Got Baggage?

Ever heard the phrase 'leave the past behind' or 'just let it go'? Easier said than done, right? Our brains seem to be wired to remember intense emotional events, whether positive or negative. Just thinking back to that event is like reliving the experience; it can be pleasurable (like a first kiss) or painful (like a bad breakup). Although these events have passed, they still exist, in the realm of memory; ready to be reanimated with just a thought. Being able to remember and relive happy memories is a good thing, but it’s the painful stuff that proves to be a burden if we’re not careful.

Surely there’s a purpose in having a vivid memory. It’s our way of archiving experiences into various categories of usefulness; from remembering where you left your keys to making a note to never date someone with a certain personality type, ever. But here’s the kicker: negative emotion enhances memory accuracy more than positive emotion does. Think back to any particularly unpleasant moment in your past, and I bet you can remember every detail, down to the smell. Now try it for a happy memory, how much do you specifically remember, other than it was a really good moment? Maybe our brains are better at remembering the bad stuff because there are more lessons to be learned from them, and if we can recall what went wrong in particular, we can take precautions to make sure it doesn’t happen again. That’s what I figure anyway.

Let’s go back to the burden of memory. Being able to recall the past is useful, but we run the risk of being stuck in it, hauling it along with us into the present, hence the term ‘emotional baggage’. The more you think about something, the more energy you give it and the more power it has to influence your life. When it comes to finding and starting a new relationship, alot of times our baggage gets in the way. Despite ourselves, the pain of the past influences how we act in the present, making it difficult to move forward into a fresh start. Sometimes we use the past as a sort of protection, keeping it alive to always ‘remind’ us to never get hurt again. But if you're always reliving it, you can never get past it.

We know it’s not good to carry all that baggage around, but how can we really get rid of it, when the past has shaped so much of who we are? Well maybe if we look at the task from a different angle, it can be possible. Instead seeing the past as something to battle, let’s see it as something to make peace with. Unpack that baggage. Look at each piece of history; acknowledge the lessons each part has to tell, then lay your burden down. The best way to honour the past is to make the most of your present. Trust yourself to make better decisions, and trust that you will recover when you don’t. Lay aside blame, shame, and all that pain, and keep moving forward. Good memories await, all you have to do is make room for them.

There's a fine line between erotic and explicit, and Teddy Pendergrass had a fine talent of infusing his songs with sensuality without being salacious. His ruggedly handsome looks, infectious smile and commanding yet soothing voice exuded a powerful masculinity and virility that many male R&B singers of today would be hard put to match. Man, I wish I could have experienced those ladies only concerts he was notorious for in the 1970s, but I was in diapers in those days. My mom was a Teddy P fan, and I remember listening to his LPs and cassettes over and over till they wore out. Teddy was the first black male singer to record five consecutive multi-platinum albums; he was king. You want to set a sultry sexy mood, all you need is Teddy P...just close the door, turn off the lights and get ready for a love TKO...

Episode 14: Celebrating Sade

Sade is my favourite female soul singer, hands down. Her raspy yet smooth vocals and poignant lyrics have a way of gripping your heart with moving melting melodies that mix into any mood. Although today is her 51st birthday, Sade barely looks a day over 30; yet another mystery that adds to her enigmatic persona.

With her husky haunting voice and mysterious persona, Sade is a living legend and musical icon. Her melodic style and delivery has influenced the sound of many neo-soul artists, from Maxwell to India Arie. In an age of egotistical and explicit exhibitionism, Sade’s subtlety and demure demeanour provides an endearing and classy contrast. The daughter of an English mother and Nigerian father, Sade possesses a comfort in weaving between elements of jazz, funk, reggae, bossa nova and even hip hop; creating a sound that is distinct and timeless.

Sade’s individualism is not just apparent in her vocal technique and trademark ponytail, but in the fact that she’s a songwriter. Her lyrics are genuine; filled with earnest emotion and frank vulnerability. Unlike many female singers in the music industry, Sade doesn’t strain to be in the spotlight or in the latest styles. She is notoriously reclusive and makes her private life a priority. But despite distancing herself from the machine of popularity (that often chews up and spits out many a celebrity), Sade is still accessible - through her music. With each album you get an accounting of her life, love, and longing.

The only complaint Sade fans could present would be the extremely long hiatuses between albums. It’s like an astrological event whenever a new one is released. In her 25 year career, Sade has only put out 6 studio albums, with her latest Soldier Of Love the longest awaited yet, emerging 10 years after 2000’s Lovers Rock. One would wonder why there are such long stretches between her creations, but as Sade explains, “You can only grow as an artist as long as you allow yourself the time to grow as a person”. This is what brings such depth to Sade’s songs; they are like diary entries of emotional discoveries, all chronicling her life’s journey. Listening to her albums is like having a long conversation with an old friend you haven’t seen in years but still hold dear to your heart. Becoming reacquainted is a joy and by the end it’s like they’d never left.

Sade has insisted that she is not a brand, and therefore will only make records when she feels she has something to say, not just for the sake of selling a product. This level of artistic integrity, especially at her level of stardom, is very rare. And it’s this authenticity which defines Sade’s music; it couldn’t be any other way, or it wouldn’t be Sade.

With her first studio album in 10 years to be released on Febuary 9th, the excitement is palpable amongst fans. Sade devotees are a patient bunch, because we know that whatever she decides to bless us with is always worth the wait. Just seeing the video for her new single "Soldier of Love" has got me wired up in anticipation. So to bide the time till that day, I've been listening to all of Sade's albums, from 1984's Diamond Life to 2000's Lovers Rock. In celebration, thought I'd share some of my favourite Sade songs with you. Happy birthday Sade, and welcome back!
